What It Is

Differentiated instruction is one of the five components in the Dorchester District Two Literacy Model.  It is realized that not all first graders are reading at a first grade level.  Some are reading above or below grade level.  Therefore, during this part of the students' day, they are provided with literacy lessons at their instructional level.  The Literacy Crew's goal is to provide children with reading strategies and skills that will make them more independent and fluent readers.

How It Works

Each day the Literacy Crew works with small groups of children for 35 minutes.  These groups contain 3-7 children that have been grouped according to their current instructional reading level.  Groups are formed based on reading readiness assessment results and teacher judgment.  The groups are flexible, which means that students move in and out of groups based on their reading progression throughout the year.  Each lesson contains explicit direct instruction that focuses on a reading strategy or skill, teacher modeling and demonstrations, as well as, group and independent practice using level appropriate pieces of literature.  During independent practice, students read one on one with a member of the Literacy Crew, who encourages them to demonstrate mastery of the focus skill or strategy.  The lesson is closed with students sharing their skill/strategy related discoveries.
